Reading carries by far the most items, since it's split across three task types (Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage). Listening is close behind across its four task types. Yes. Reading and Listening are adaptive in difficulty, not in item count — your performance on early items affects which module you see next, but the total number of items you answer stays consistent. Writing and Speaking are linear for every test-taker, so their item counts don't vary at all.
Reading's 50 items reflect its three-task structure and the amount of text-based content needed to reliably assess reading comprehension across different question types. This is worth knowing for pacing purposes — Reading has both the most questions and, at about 30 minutes, one of the tighter time budgets per question, which is why time management specifically matters more there than in sections with fewer, longer-format items.
