TOEFL Test Day Checklist: 24 Hours Before Your Exam

The night and morning before your TOEFL matter more for performance than most test-takers expect — pacing, focus, and Speaking fluency all suffer disproportionately from poor sleep or a rushed morning compared to Reading or Listening. Here's a practical countdown, for both Home Edition and test center. For exactly what to bring, see our registration guide.

The Night Before

  • Stop active studying by early evening. Cramming new material the night before rarely helps and often increases anxiety instead — a light review of material you already know is a better use of the evening.
  • Confirm your logistics. For a test center, confirm the address, your travel route, and estimated travel time. For Home Edition, run the required system check and confirm your test room is set up correctly.
  • Prioritize sleep over one more study session. Speaking and Writing performance in particular are noticeably affected by fatigue — a full night's sleep is a higher-leverage use of your last evening than extra review.

The Morning Of

  • Eat something before you start. The test runs roughly two hours including directions and tutorial time — plan a meal that will hold you through that without leaving you either hungry or sluggish.
  • Do a short warm-up, not a study session. A brief warm-up — reading a short passage, listening to a short clip — activates the right mental mode without the anxiety of cramming new content right before the exam.
  • Arrive or log in with buffer time. For a test center, arrive earlier than the minimum required check-in time. For Home Edition, log in and complete the check-in process well before your scheduled start rather than right at the edge.

Test Center Specifics

Bring your valid photo ID and registration confirmation, expect to store personal electronics for the duration of your session, and dress in a light layer since room temperature can vary and you won't be able to step out to adjust once the session begins.

Home Edition Specifics

Confirm your internet connection is stable, clear your desk completely, and make sure everyone in your household knows not to enter your room or make noise for the full session — an interruption during Home Edition can affect your test in ways that don't apply at a test center, so this step is worth confirming explicitly the night before, not assumed.
